Very Hit and Miss submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2022, 6:33pm This DVD includes five animated Garfield television specials from the mid- to late 1980s, including episodes themed around Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. These all capture their respective holiday spirits fairly well, with a mixture of sarcastic humor and genuine emotion that parallels, but doesn’t quite match, the tone of the comic strip at these times of year. The other two episodes are the most memorable, for both good and bad reasons. “Garfield on the Town” is bittersweet as the beloved cat becomes separated from Jon and ends up reconnecting with his biological family during a night on the rough streets; the story is both heartwarming and sad, with surprising depth for the format. “Garfield in Paradise”, however, revolves around a terrible story and outright racist depictions of Pacific Islanders, with little (if anything) in the way of redeeming qualities. The animation quality across the board is choppy by modern standards but fairly representative of the period; the songs (yep, you read that correctly) are solid, if not outstanding; and the humor straddles the line between silly and surprisingly mature (there is one recurring gag, in particular, that I wouldn’t want to hear a kid repeating). Aside from the unfortunate misstep, which should have never made the cut for this collection, this is an entertaining group of cartoons that bring the popular comic strip to life in a format that is a good match for the strip’s characters, storytelling tendencies, and sense of humor.
