The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metalminds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands, as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate. Along the way he discovers hints that point to the true goals of his uncle Edwarn and the shadowy organization known as The Set.

Always another secret submitted by brady.emmett on July 6, 2016, 2:36pm Sanderson outdoes himself with this novel. The mysteries that he has been building up across his previous Mistborn novels start to come together to makes sense. Just remember, there is always another secret.

okay submitted by ishhewitt on July 15, 2016, 10:41am It was an okay read, a little predictable.

This series is a fantasy must-read submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 27, 2016, 4:13pm Even one of Sanderson's books that feels less-than-his-absolute-best is still a book I can't put down. This installment of the Mistborn compendium just doesn't have the vibrancy that some of the others have had. The main character Waxillium feels a bit flat. There is a plot twist that feels completely out of left field to me, although Sanderson says in the introduction that the whole Mistborn storyline (complete) is only just past half way written, and just beginning to touch on where it is heading. So I suspect that the out-of-left-field twist is actually our introduction to something that will drive the next four or five books.

I loved the secondary character Wayne. Like the last book, he was actually my favorite. He has more depth than we expect, he's funny as can be, and while he provides the comic relief, he is also a steadfast friend and ally. All the characters we got to know well in the last couple of books come into their own more here, and this will read well again some day when I read the set straight through.

Sanderson is never a miss. He plots carefully and knows where he is going. The universe he draws us into is complex but fascinating. Start at the beginning, but if you like fantasy, this series is a must read.
