translators? submitted by aScheller on December 7, 2015, 4:57pm voice acting in either English or Japanese was effective on an English story now set in Japan with a predictable but satisfying resolution. It is not clear why this could not have been made as live action.

One translation oddity is that the Japanese subtitle reads Anna has ruined the Tanabata matsuri by calling Nobuko (?) a fat pig and "pulled a cutter" (meaning that Anna blew them off to run away) while the English voice actors relate that Anna "pulled a knife".

sooo gooood! submitted by downing on June 18, 2016, 12:59pm I am really happy Ghibli films are back. This one wasn't what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it.

Good...until the end submitted by mrajraspn08 on August 16, 2016, 12:26pm I really enjoyed this movie for most of it. They hinted at so many possibilities that would have been wonderful. And then they got to the end, and it just wasn't as good as any of the possibilities I had in mind. Not sure if I'd recommend it or not.

Beautiful and engrossing submitted by torikaebaya on February 4, 2017, 11:45am Beautiful and engrossing. My all-time favorite film to date.

Enchanting submitted by mgabbieb on June 21, 2023, 1:23pm Has some elements of magical realism. Themes of belonging and family.
