Asylum takes place in England, during the high-Freudian days of the 1950s, when psychiatry had started to flex its muscles. Hugh Bonneville is a professional success, but his wife Stella has already exhausted the era's possibilities--she adores her 10-year-old son, but her marriage has long since faded into endless days, gray evenings sipping scotch by the fire, and badly concealed contempt. Hugh has been hired by a sprawling high-security psychiatric hospital as grim as a tomb. Then Stella meets the patient assigned to renovate the greenhouse, Edgar Stark, a sculptor institutionalized for murdering his wife in a jealous pique. Their gazes lock, they immerse themselves in a passionate clandestine affair and inevitably, catastrophe follows.
