COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I tried to like it... submitted by bookher on July 13, 2016, 1:12pm I really tried to like this series because I've heard so many people say they love it but I just couldn't get interested in it.

The Leftovers - season 1 Blu-ray submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on August 24, 2016, 8:16pm I am surprised by how much I've been enjoying this show. I hadn't watched it at all until binging recently, and I'd heard that the first season was inclined to be dissatisfying. But I think it works really well as a binge-watch, and can see why it would feel slow or insubstantial if watching an episode weekly. There are some running themes - most not very subtle, but used in an amount that rarely feels too overdone or contrived. The long character and gradual plot arcs work for me.

Ann Dowd is absolutely fantastic in a mostly nonspeaking yet significant role. The rest of the cast is mostly great as well.

The in-episode music scoring is top-notch.

"The Leftovers" is based around an apparently paranormal experience: 2% of the world's population suddenly and simultaneously vanishes one day. The show deals primarily with the fallout from that event, ranging from individuals' various coping/continuing on mechanisms to new and altered government practices. It's about grief and terrible lack of confidence in this subsequent reality. It's also simply a very good weird fiction drama.

Highly recommended for fans of Les Revenants/The Returned, Twin Peaks, Bates Motel, and other shows that deliver strong atmospheres and character studies.

Provocative submitted by ferielp on August 31, 2018, 1:16pm It's an excellent show with a brilliant Rapture-like concept, which is explored from religious, scientific, and science fiction angles. The acting is excellent, the moral dilemmas are compelling, and score has stayed with me months later.
