When a lizard hatches from the egg Leonard finds in the park, he names it Buster and takes it all around the city, but Buster grows bigger and bigger until Leonard realizes he must devise a way to return his pet to the deepest, darkest part of the park and set him free.

in the deepest, darkest part of the park . . . submitted by FordAlpha on August 31, 2019, 11:22pm . . . a little boy named Leonard finds an unusual egg. The creature that hatches out becomes his closest companion, sharing the wonders of city exploration as it grows and grows and grows. This part of the story is reminiscent of Steven Kellogg's "The Mysterious Tadpole", though more subtly rendered, with a sense of quiet wonder rather than madcap mayhem. Unsurprisingly, the now-giant creature must be returned to its home; the solution they come up with to get him there is imaginative and surprising. But the biggest surprise of all is that another new friend has been looking for Leonard all along. My kids enjoyed reading this sweet, understated story many times while we had it checked out.
