Episode 1. Meet Martin Ellingham, an eminent physician with a nasty disposition. Forced to give up his career as a London surgeon after developing a fear of blood, he takes a job as GP in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn. His irascible manner and permanent scowl soon have the town in an uproar; he insults each patient he sees and offends nearly everyone else. The only person who's glad to see him is his aunt Joan. Episode 2. Martin's first official day on the job may be his last when he orders all and sundry, who seem to think the surgery is a town meeting place, out on the street. Having reached the end of his tether, he also fires his receptionist Elaine, only to find that pretty well everyone in village now shuns him. His aunt Joan suggests he should be a little more understanding, but that is not exactly Martin's style. One patient who does remain is Roger Fenn who has a lump in his throat that Martin fears may be cancerous. In a quiet moment, Martin reveals to him the phobia that has caused him to give up surgery and become a GP. Episode 3. When an epidemic of diarrhea strikes the village the doctor takes immediate action. This however does not go down well with the population.
Episode 4. The doctor pays a visit to the forester, who apparently shares his shack with a giant squirrel. Little Peter Cronk gets into trouble over some nest boxes. Episode 5. An old friend of aunt Joan's turns up, stirring up old memories. In the meanwhile both Doc Martin and Elaine are struggling with other people's affections. Episode 6. Word is getting out in the village about the doctor's 'little problem' with blood. When Peter Cronk is hurt concern about him brings Martin and Louisa closer together.
DVD, widescreen (1.78:1, enhanced) presentation; Dolby Digital stereo., NTSC.

Very Good! submitted by strawberryhead on April 30, 2016, 9:08am This is a very good series. Falls into Comedy Drama. The TV series is safe for the whole family to watch BUT the two movies prior to the tv series have some sexual situations in them. The movies have a different storyline then the show and the show is 10 times better.

For interested parents:
-No sexual situations other than a child born out of wedlock, the couple is monogamous and they eventually marry.
-There is one gay couple storyline in one of the shows however it is not central to the series.
-No American English swearing other than maybe the D word, there may be a couple English "bullocks" here or there.
-No overtly anti-religious themes however one small recurring character is slightly mocked by Doc Martin for being a Born Again Christian-Bible Thumper-Jesus Freak, however Doc Martin is openly hostile to all people equally so the characterization is dismissed by other people in the stories. Most characters in the show go to church, many church scenes and there is a wedding church scene and school children singing about the Lords gifts.

No western (American) child indoctrinations detected. So nice to see a show without an "agenda" other than to be entertaining!

Overall the characters are delightful and many are somewhat odd, Doc Martin is curt and grumpy and lacks "bedside" manner.

Saw the first 6 episodes on DVD. THis is an OUTSTANDING series, especially compared to the moronic crap you see on the networks submitted by Tassos on February 11, 2019, 7:55am I had seen before one or two episodes on PBS, but yesterday Iborrowed the series DVDs and saw the first 6 episodes, in their right order, and it was so much better. It all made pefect sense.

This is an OUTSTANDING series, especially compared to the GARBAGE, the UTTER GARBAGE, our TV programs are FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH every day. Worthless reality shows, contemptible soap operas, BOTH on Networks AND on PBS (Downton Abbey, anyone?) Disgusting news-free Local and network news, moronic movies. You name it.

I saw one existing review where some pedantic schoolmarm applied political correctness criteria to evaluate if this show is ok for children

Everybody Pay attention: This is a show for GROWN UPS, it was not targeted for Children. There is a whole section in the library with Children's DVDs.

And not only is a show for GROWN UPS, the more grown up your BRAIN is, the more you will LOVE it and appreciate every little (but VERY THOUGHTFUL) nuance in the EXCELLENT script and acting.

This show is an OASIS. Too bad in a few weeks I will have finished the 8 seasons (are there more?), and it will be time to turn off the STUPID TV and the idiotic movies and read more GOOD (not your bestseller crap) books instead.

Enjoyable submitted by thesrays on August 25, 2019, 7:51pm I enjoyed season 1, although not the later seasons as much...

Good fun! submitted by Angela Argento on August 20, 2020, 4:28pm Well developed storyline and characters collide to keep you interested.

I don't like it so far. submitted by valentina on September 9, 2022, 2:25pm Very unlikable village characters. Poor actors performance. I am surprised to see so many enthusiastic reviews.

I have no problem with the sexual content at all, but the review somewhere above is just factually incorrect... submitted by Steve Amick on October 1, 2022, 6:46am ...right away in ep. 1, the middle-aged woman talks about how she needs more vaginal cream and that she and her husband (and later, we see, also her young surfer lover,) enjoy "the slippiness" of it. That's a fairly graphic image, which again, I have no problem with, but the weird review above that goes through a litany of "wholesome"ounding bulletpoints is way off in saying there's no sexual content. And the "out of wedlock" thing deosn't even happen in this season. So why is that review just copied and pasted in every series??
