Ex Machina - Intelligent Science Fiction submitted by husdant on August 30, 2020, 8:04pm Writing, directing, acting, and just the right amount of special effects add up to a good thriller.

Brilliant submitted by brooksza on August 15, 2022, 11:18am This is Alex Garland's masterpiece. I haven't seen this since it came out and it's enhanced by seeing the other properties he's made since. This movie is brilliant and very rewatchable. It is so well executed.

There are a ton of themes to chew on that appear in Garland's subsequent properties. The ideas of humanity, gods, parenting, trauma and the confluence of technology and nature. Good stuff that shows up in a lot of sci-fi stories I like, but it feels unique.

I love the way humans, machines and nature intersect visually in this movie. The color red pops throughout this movie when green isn't on screen.

Alicia Vikander is robotic and then human at times. You never know her real motivations, even when she expresses joy near the end. Was that practice? Oscar Isaac is perfect in his role too but in look and performance.

This time I picked up on the literal god in a machine coming down at the end. I think I'd pick up new things each time I watch this.

Other thoughts:
- After watching this I listened to a podcast about the recent Google AI sentience and it's pretty nuts how prescient these ideas were 7 years ago.
- We get a reference to chess, and this movie was a total chess match.
- The human named Caleb working with AI characters, is the Westworld character name a nod to him?
