A love letter to Venice submitted by amy on August 5, 2019, 2:00pm Each winter for twenty or so years, Joseph Brodsky, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and former Poet Laureate of the United States (he also taught at the University of Michigan), spent a month in Venice. In lyric prose, he meditates on some of his memorable encounters with the city during these sojourns, from his lonely wanderings at night to brushes with love and illness, celebrity and death. (Brodsky would eventually be buried in Venice.) His elegant descriptions of the influence of water and light on the city's history and art are worth the read alone. All in all, a thoughtful love letter to the city and a great read if you're planning a visit yourself.
