A Worthy Conclusion submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 10:19am Instead of coasting or spinning its wheels, the final season of Justified moves forward with a strong sense of purpose and leaves its characters in a satisfying state of resolution that still manages to hold a few surprises. The season uses a similar structure to previous ones, with a combination of storylines that ultimately bring Raylan and Boyd together as they respectively deal with a third-party criminal element. Everything is complicated, however, by the weight of all of the previous storylines and it all culminate, appropriately, in a final confrontation that tests Raylan’s nerve and asks whether his time in Kentucky has changed him, and (more importantly) how. A parade of cameo appearances from prior prominent side characters gives the show an appropriate send-off, enhancing the show’s version of Harlan County as a real, lived-in place bending (and sometimes cracking) under the weight of its own history. The season has its flaws, of course, not the least among them the fact that the show has always explicitly valorized law enforcement officials with very little respect for any legal constraints on their power (a tendency that will rightfully turn off many viewers and that ultimately makes the series difficult to recommend), but in the context of Justified and Raylan and Boyd’s shared story, it makes for a worthy ending indeed.
