A revealing and beautifully written memoir and family history from acclaimed photographer Sally Mann. In this groundbreaking book, a unique interplay of narrative and image, Mann's preoccupation with family, race, mortality, and the storied landscape of the American South are revealed as almost genetically predetermined, written into her DNA by the family history that precedes her. Sorting through boxes of family papers and yellowed photographs she finds more than she bargained for: deceit and scandal, alcohol, domestic abuse, car crashes, bogeymen, clandestine affairs, dearly loved and disputed family land . . . racial complications, vast sums of money made and lost, the return of the prodigal son, and maybe even bloody murder. In lyrical prose and startlingly revealing photographs, she crafts a totally original form of personal history that has the page-turning drama of a great novel but is firmly rooted in the fertile soil of her own life.

Best Read of 2015 submitted by mowjac on August 20, 2016, 9:35pm Sally Mann has seen her share of controversy regarding her photographs of her family. She addresses this issue head on but doesn't dwell on it; she has too much more to say. This is one of the best written most interesting memoirs I've ever read. More than just a memoir, it is deeply rooted in place and family as Mann makes connections between the lives of her ancestors and her own life. The book is lavishly illustrated with her photography. A must read for photographers, artists of all kinds will find inspiration. Anyone looking for a well written memoir can enjoy this.

Impressive! submitted by debbifs on July 26, 2019, 12:05pm I was vaguely familiar with Mann's work -- mostly due to the controversy around the photographs she made of her kids. I now have a much deeper appreciation for her visual artistry. But even more than her photography, I was struck by the strength of her writing. A+ for sense of place!

Her photos pull me in. Her writing is even stronger a force submitted by ccrose on August 26, 2019, 8:31am Not many photographers want to trust themselves with words. But Mann seems to be always watching for more answers to her questions. Like unraveling a skein of tangled yarn. Writing helped her make sense of her instincts for pictures. Thank you, Ms. Mann, I’ll keep looking to see what you keep showing us the beauty of your world.
