COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Silliness! submitted by doctorfang on July 26, 2015, 11:48pm This is a silly comedy that stands up to multiple viewings. It's no Citizen Cain, but the humor and performances from John Candy and Steve Martin are strong. So many wonderful quotes in this movie: "You're going the WRONG way!!!"

A Classic Odd Couple Comedy submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:17pm This classic odd couple comedy is a particularly interesting film to watch in the age of cell phones and ubiquitous communication, although the same problems of fight cancellation and limited rental car availability are unfortunately still with us (smoking in most public spaces, fortunately, is not). The plot follows uptight businessman Neal as his impossibly convoluted path to Thanksgiving dinner in Chicago becomes increasingly entwined with the jovial and free-spirited Del’s own route home. The pair encounter a series of escalating mishaps as they embrace whatever possibilities open up for them as a result of Del’s business connections, with everything going hilariously wrong. The real joy of this film is watching Steve Martin and John Candy fully inhabit their characters, who play into their respective strengths; both are spot-on and their genuine performances make the film’s predictable emotional climax feel as moving as it is obviously contrived. The film holds up very well despite some elements that firmly date it to the late 1980s, and it is a joy to watch two top-class comedians in their groove.
