whimsical idea falls flat submitted by schriste on July 27, 2015, 3:45pm Mrs. Noodlekugel has a name that makes you smile to read. She has a talking cat, Mr. Fuzzface. Her cottage is home to four nearly-blind mice, and gingerbread cookies have a regular habit of running away. What will happen when siblings Nick and Maxine come to visit? Unfortunately, not much. Pinkwater sets up whimsical characters but then doesn't develop them. Nick and Maxine are interchangeable and have no defining characteristics, either collectively or individually. Mrs. Noodlekugel herself is kindly eccentric. Mr. Fuzzface is refined. The mice need glasses. Such one-dimensionality would be fine if the plot was anywhere near as exciting as the book would suggest--but strangely little happens in this book. Other aspects of the writing made it less delightful to read aloud. Pinkwater avoids contractions, leaving everyone to talk formally; when identifying dialogue, characters "said" much too often. I'm assuming these odd syntax choices were made to make the book accessible to early readers, and as such it meets the mark. My oldest child read it to herself; my middle and younger enjoyed hearing it read to them. The pictures were the book's saving grace. While my children would recommend it, I'd suggest the Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo to share together.
