Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, are swept up in a baffling case that will lead them from the idyllic panoramas of Japan to the depths of Oxford's most revered institution. Aboard the steamer Thomas Carlyle, Holmes recognizes the Earl of Darley, whom he suspects of being an occasional blackmailer. And then there's the lithe, surprisingly fluent young Japanese woman who befriends Russell and quotes haiku. She agrees to tutor the couple in Japanese language and customs, but Russell can't shake the feeling that Haruki Sato is not who she claims to be.

Historic Mystery in 1930's Japan submitted by sdunav on June 12, 2015, 1:20pm Russell and Holmes go to Japan. Nice historical mystery, but you need to start at the beginning of this series. Interesting pre-WWII setting with spies (and spires, the dreaming spies/spires are in Oxford as well as rural Japan), bathhouses, steam ships, and trains.

Venture into 1920s Japan
submitted by camelsamba on August 30, 2020, 10:32pm
There were aspects of the story that I figured out along the way, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I didn't always enjoy Mary's attitude, but I did the insights into 1920s Japan, and British society, and ocean liner travel. Each chapter begins with a haiku, although i did not succeed in identifying if they relate directly to the content of the chapter.
(For what it's worth, I haven't read all the books in this series. There may be some elements of the relationship between Russell and Holmes that I miss as a result, but the books are enjoyable independently for those who don't want to commit to the entire series.)
