Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Helen McCrory, Eva Green, Simon Russell Beale, Billie Piper, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear.
An erotically charged, profoundly unsettling new saga, it completely reinvents literature's most iconic and terrifying characters. Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and timeless figures from Dracula join a core of original characters in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul, even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations.
Blu-ray, widescreen 1.85:1 presentation; requires Blu-ray player.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Bloody good submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 17, 2016, 2:11pm Despite the name, “Penny Dreadful” is anything but. The science fiction/fantasy series from Showtime and Sky gathers characters and other elements from 19th century literature, along with other 19th century persona and phenomenon into a complex drama.

Our main characters include Vanessa Ives (played by Eva Green of “Casino Royale” and “Dark Shadows”), who occasionally becomes possessed by a demon and so is able to converse with and see supernatural beings when no one else can, and Sir Malcolm Murray (played by former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton). Together they form a team whose mission is to save Murray’s daughter from the vampires who abducted her. The team includes Sembene (Danny Sapani) who came to Britain from Africa to work for Murray; Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway); and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), an American sharpshooter running from his own criminal past.

During own heroes’ adventures (or most often, misadventures), we meet characters from other 19th century fiction, including Frankenstein’s monster (whom the doctor abandoned without evening bestowing a name upon him), Dorian Gray and Prof. Van Helsing.

The name “penny dreadful” refers to horror stories printed onto cheap paper and sold for a penny in Victorian Britain. As the show is set in Victorian London and depicts a great deal of blood and gore, the name is quite apt.
