Opposites attract with magnetic force in this romantic road-trip delight, about a spoiled runaway socialite and a roguish man-of-the-people reporter who is determined to get the scoop on her scandalous disappearance. The first film to accomplish the very rare feat of sweeping all five major Oscar categories (best picture, best actor, best actress, best director, and best screenplay), is among the most gracefully constructed and edited films of the early sound era.
DVD; Aspect ratio 1.33:1.

An Essential Pre-Code Rom-Com submitted by Meginator on August 20, 2020, 12:58am What a fantastic early romantic comedy! This was the first film to sweep the five major Oscar categories, and its quality is obvious even today. Some of the tricks and tropes employed here are old hat by now, but in context they feel fresh and surprisingly forward-thinking; for a film produced in the early 1930s, the treatment of women is actually pretty good, with Claudette Colbert’s spoiled, yet clever, Ellie regularly holding her own against Clark Gable’s roguish Peter. The pair’s chemistry is immediate and undeniable, buoyed by an excellent supporting cast who easily carry the script’s sense of humor into reality, occasionally upstaging the leads themselves (Alan Hale’s singing car driver is an absolute delight; I could watch an entire film of his character’s exploits). The humor, too, is timeless, and I frequently laughed out loud at the writers’ cleverness and the actors’ pitch-perfect delivery and physicality. This is a prime example of story fully carrying a film without a lazy reliance on titillation or boorish dirty jokes; these days, this film feels very back to basics, but in a way that highlights the skill involved in conceiving and producing it. The technical elements are done quite well, save for a couple of rough edits, and the lighting is at times sublime. Every element of this film falls perfectly into place, and it’s one that holds its own against anything produced in the succeeding 80+ years; I’m sure I’ll return to it for a classic feel-good pick up.
