Solid Start to the Series submitted by chuntoon on June 12, 2015, 9:23am A generally interesting read with a nice inversion of power dynamics and subversion of the typical dichotomy of good and evil. You may crave a narrative by the books central character, but you will spend the whole book waiting.

Hesitantly Enjoyed submitted by lcaitday on June 16, 2018, 5:32pm Anne Bishop is one of those people who writes in a way that you have to know what comes next, even if you really really don't want to know what comes next. There was a lot of violence and awful things(rape, incest etc) happening but she more focuses on the children's fear/PTSD and the other adult's obliviousness than the actual acts themselves. The characters and world were intriguing enough that I will definitely check out the rest of the series.

Entertaining Concepts in a Fantasy Series submitted by Zac Johnson on July 31, 2019, 12:41pm I plowed through this series, and while the second book was the best, I was entertained throughout. An interesting aspect was that the magic derived from colored crystals (kind of like Fleetwood Mac's third album) and each color was more powerful than the colors before it, so you got this weird hierarchy of witches and wizards who could lord over somebody, or had to bow down to somebody else based on the power of the color.

dark fantasy submitted by kittenkat101 on June 17, 2023, 11:14pm This is one of my favorite dark fantasy series. Although the protagonist starts as a young girl, this is by no means a book for children. Fascinating world building and story--followed up in a few sequels after the black jewels trilogy. Highly recommend for those into darker fiction. Definitely not a happy or an easy read (mature themes and violence) but absolutely enthralling.
