Lewis takes listeners on a journey through the history of theater in the 20th century, exploring movements such as symbolism, expressionism, and dadaism, which arose amid political turmoil and quickly fueled rapid change in the way playwrights, directors, and actors approached theater. Lewis then goes on to examine how currents such as politics, race relations, and the women's movement also influenced theater and used it as a force for social change.
