The ideas that drive this science fiction classic are undeniably compelling (and, insofar as they relate to mankind’s imperialist tendencies, sadly relevant), but the narrative framework doesn’t do them full justice. Lem never really develops any of these characters, despite the fact that the plot hinges on their interactions, and any sense of suspense that develops is immediately undercut by a long expository passage of invented history. Lem’s thoroughness in this regard is certainly admirable, but makes for difficult, dense reading in practice. Despite its interesting ideas and the implications thereof, and a consistently sinister undertow that does at least drive the reader to want to uncover more about the peculiar happenings aboard this extraplanetary station, I found this book to be a bit of a slog that fell far short of its vast potential.
