This is another time-based effect that’s somewhere between the extremes of the flanger and the glossiness of the chorus pedal. The swirling effect is all over the first two Van Halen albums. Early phasers were supposed to re-create the complex sound of a B-3 Leslie cabinet, which had a rotating horn and a spinning drum under a 15-inch woofer. Though the sound wasn’t really close, it was better than hauling around a 250-pound Leslie cabinet.

From the awesome folks at Sweetwater: Guitar Pedal Buying Guide

This device has found its way into many of Eddie Van Halen's recordings, adding a shimmery velocity to lead passages or a more dramatic swoosh to muted strumming. Not just for guitars; it works well with bass, keyboards and even vocals. Vary the speed from a subtle, long cycle to a fast, watery warble...and myriad vintage vibrations in between.
