Laugh-out-loud brilliant! submitted by lmangus on July 12, 2023, 9:19am This film is quirky, silly, but the script and acting is also brilliant and smart in surprising ways. At its core, it has a beauty that's unexpected (ie: all who are try to care for Nathan Jr, find they love him). Keeps you on your toes...this is not a movie to snooze through. A young Holly Hunter and Nick Cage play Ed and H.I. to perfection; you get a true appreciation, considering their depth of roles since this was made, that they are masters of their craft. As is John Goodman! His character Gale is mesmerizing, clawing his way out of the earth with goo oozing from his mouth, bellowing guttural calls as he succeeds in freeing himself (and his brother). The passing of the Dr Spock baby care book between all the adults ( there to the end, although singed and tattered...as new parents often feel) is just one of the endless clever little details that makes this movie one we reach for when we need to laugh and smile. "Well, okay THEN!"

Nicolas Cage's performance as the bumbling, yet lovable, ex-convict H.I. has been a standout for many viewers. Likewise, Holly Hunter's portrayal of Edwina and her dynamic with Cage received widespread acclaim.
