COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Orange is the New Black submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 14, 2014, 8:17pm Based on the memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, the protagonist of this series learns about herself and her fellow inmates through a season that culminates in quite a cliff-hanger.

"Orange" depicts not just Piper's misadventures, but also the lives of the other inmates before prison--and not just what caused them to get arrested. Some were junkies; some were single mothers desperate to support their children; some were former wards of the state with no way to support themselves. The nation's way to deal with all of these social problems: put all these women in prison.

Despite the excessive nudity and sex, the drama does show the inmates as real people leading the viewer to feel compassion for them. The show also depicts quite a diverse population: people of numerous races, religions, and social classes (although most from low-income families), and sexual orientations. The characters speak numerous languages, including Spanish, French and Russian. At least two of the inmates are immigrants and several are gay or bisexual. The show includes a transgender actress, Laverne Cox, playing a transgender woman sent to prison after being framed by someone who could not accept her transitioning.

Well done submitted by Pooh3238 on June 24, 2019, 9:17pm Well done show. Frustrating at times seeing what is happening to the inmates. Even if they did bad things, they're still people.

A good start submitted by Aimless on August 5, 2019, 3:24pm This is a great start to one of Netflix flagship series. It is interesting and fun
