The government finally relents and recognizing rights for Indians. Gandhi goes back to India, where he is now considered something of a national hero. He is urged to take up the fight for India's independence from the British Empire. Gandhi agrees, and mounts a non-violent campaign of unprecedented scale. The campaign generates great attention and the Britain face intense public pressure. Weaken from World War II, the Britain finally grant India's independence. Religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims erupt into nationwide violence. Gandhi declares a hunger strike, saying he will not eat until the fighting stops. Pakistan is created for the Muslims and it is hoped that the violence will abate. Gandhi is opposed to the idea. Gandhi spends his last days trying to bring about peace between both nations. Gandhi and Jinnah, played by British men
submitted by willow on August 31, 2015, 7:21am
Has colonialism triumphed when the best actors to play Gandhi and Jinnah are both....from the UK?
Ben Kingsley's father was Indian, but he wore heavy brown makeup to play Gandhi.
Christopher Lee, who lacked an Indian parent, played Jinnah, and was chosen because the film producers felt he physically resembled him.
