This novel is set in Utah, in the year 1871. Jane Withersteen, a wealthy and contented rancher, befriends Bernie Venters, who happens to be a non-Mormon. This angers several Elders, who pressure her to break with Bernie and decree that she must marry the grim, arrogant Elder Tull. Jane resists, and Tull and his band try to break her will by the use of more violent methods. Enter Lassiter, a loner from the North, who has a fearsome reputation as a deadly hand with a gun.
