Fifteen-year-old Polly kills her abusive father by setting fire to their home. She takes her younger brother and flees to a Shaker community named the City of Hope. At this time in the community across the world, young girls are experiencing mystical visions and are called 'Visionist'. The City of Hope does not have a Visionist yet, until Polly comes and is called illustrious. While she struggles with this new 'gift', she makes a life-altering friendship with a fellow Shaker girl, named Charity.
