Smart, Funny Urban Fantasy submitted by sdunav on July 11, 2014, 3:01pm In this cleverly constructed alternative world filled with dragons who are attracted to carbon emissions, Michigan has been abandoned (Henry Ford was eaten) and southwestern Ontario is suffering - especially the small towns who can't afford a corporate dragon-slayer.

Owen is the nephew of a famous dragon-slayer, who has retired to the village of Trondheim with her partner and her brother. Siobhan is a fellow high school student who doesn't care about much beyond her music. Owen and Siobhan's friendship - and their work - and their encounters with dragons, fellow students, and teachers - make for a unique and entertaining story, remarkably free of the cliches of Young Adult literature, especially urban fantasy. There's no twu luv, there's no specially chosen or supernaturally gifted characters here, just a good story that includes some politics, some adventure, and an utterly engaging world.

There is some violence (as you might expect with a book with "slayer" in the subtitle), but the lack of sex and the intelligent teens make this book a good choice for precocious readers as well as older teens. It's a much better selection for a 12 year old than "The Hunger Games" or "Divergent" (and a much more thoughtful book).
