Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof's free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Shunned and ostracized by many old friends and bereft of government-approved medicines, he decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Bypassing the establishment, he joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts and established a hugely successful "buyers' club."

eye opening submitted by jjdijkstra81 on June 15, 2014, 3:29pm A very adult movie. A very eye opening film. Based on a true story. I had no idea.

Amazing Acting submitted by Beth Manuel on June 16, 2014, 11:33am This film reminds us of all that we didn't know about AIDS in the 80's. The acting is superb. Jared Leto is outstanding in the part he plays as was Matthew McConaughey. I highly recommend this film.

Very Well Done submitted by monkk on June 23, 2014, 7:26pm The subject matter is not a fun one, but it's a film worth watching for the acting. Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey have never been better.

First Rate submitted by GJBarnett2 on July 10, 2014, 8:55am Well-written, well-acted. An indictment of the FDA. Deserves all the honors it has received.

award winning submitted by pamhockey25 on August 28, 2014, 4:19pm It’s interesting to look back from today’s perspective and see how AIDS was viewed in the 80s. Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) and Rayon (Jared Leto) are great and well deserves their academy awards. Recommend!

Moving Character Study submitted by Meginator on July 20, 2017, 3:41pm Dallas Buyers Club is a moving character study; it's obvious that the filmmakers and actors put a lot of emotion and effort into this film, and it pays off. My main quibble is that the transgender character is played by a cisgender male actor, which cheapens that storyline even though Leto portrays the character sympathetically. This is a valuable story that reminds us that action, and inaction, often have dire consequences, and that empathy is the most powerful emotion, the one that makes us most human.

Wow submitted by KOH on August 5, 2017, 9:47pm Incredible performances in a heartbreaking story.

Great Performance submitted by SadieRose on August 27, 2019, 10:17pm I love biopic movies. It was so interesting to see the beginning of the pharmaceutical industry in treating HIV-AIDS. Jared Leto's performance was beautiful and touching.
