Filled with powerful performances by an astonishing cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbener, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave is both an unflinching account of slavery in American history and a celebration of the indomitable power of hope.

very intense

Incredible heartbreaking. Terrible that people were treated this way for no reason other than the color of their skin. Great wardrobes in the movie, they depict the times. Great acting, I imagine this had to take a toll on each person involved. Thank goodness our country doesnt condone this type of horrible behavior any longer.

Very interesting, intense, and moving.

Until I saw this movie, I had no idea that free black people were captured and returned to the south. Disgraceful! Everyone should see this.

Great adaptation

I had never heard of Solomon Northup before this film. Despite making several deviations from the source material, the movie was made in the spirit of the book. Each actor did an impeccable job breathing life into their characters and their struggles.

True Story

I love that this man's story has been told on such a large scale, all these years later. It was a little long and difficult to watch, but well-done.

Loved It, But Hard to Watch

Overall I really loved this movie. The story is incredible and even knowing it previously, I was moved to tears at the end. Beware though, the violence is very graphic and difficult to watch knowing that this is something that actually happened in our history. The actors were wonderful, and the costuming outstanding.
