"Come savor the existential adventures of Jon Arbuckle in Garfield minus Garfield. Based on the phenomenon ignited by Dan Walsh's hilarious and wildly popular webcomic (beloved by The New York Times and The Washington Post, and hailed as inspired by Garfield creator Jim Davis), Garfield minus Garfield takes everyone's favorite cat out of the picture, leaving us with only the lonely ennui of Jon as he's left to voice thoughts about his own existence into an empty void"--P. Surprisingly Philosophical submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:39pm This is a clever play on the popular comic strip that presents the whole story of Garfield in a different, far more literal light: because Garfield (arguably) doesn’t actually talk, many of these comics are in fact about Jon Arbuckle talking to himself in an effort to enliven his otherwise dull existence. Though the book presents the originals alongside the edited versions, I recommend reading only the panels without Garfield. Removing Garfield’s commentary from the picture leaves us with a portrait of someone who suffers in turn from relentless optimism, excessive boredom, and frequent bouts of depression. A strip that is usually fairly silly becomes, instead, a profound statement on the nature of existence and the grueling experience of mental illness. Jim Davis certainly didn’t intend this when first creating these strips, but it’s lurking there, barely beneath the surface, and the shift in perspective is striking and surprisingly emotional.

Eh, so-so submitted by jgerman79 on August 18, 2022, 9:09pm This book shows why the Garfield comic needs Garfield in it. So much less funny without him!
