Fair submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 2, 2015, 2:20pm Meh. There was too much in this book that felt like it was big important stuff (the structure of the galactic political system, for example) that was never explained in ways that were clear and made sense. In the end, they really weren't all that necessary for the story... which means that the amount of set-up they received and/or their descriptions weren't well done.

My husband loved the way gender was handled and that one character was constantly referred to by both masculine and feminine pronouns, and thought that was a fascinating way to create a new non-gendered view of a society. But I thought that was never clearly explained, and so only found it confusing.

As for the story itself, it was fair. I liked it, but I didn't love it. Not a waste of my time, but I had better things to read.

This book reminded me why I read sci fi! submitted by helraja on June 20, 2016, 6:50am I loved this book. It was a little bit of work getting through the beginning because it introduces so many new things--names, places, culture--but it was absolutely worth it for what a gem it ended up being. It's extremely well-written and imaginative.

Ancillary Justice really feels like stepping off of Earth--everything feels unfamiliar. The protagonist is a spaceship (well, a spaceship AI) and, within the universe Ann Leckie has crafted, it works extremely well. It makes for an absorbing story.

It's also worth noting that this novel handles gender in a really refreshing way. If you're tired of dudebro sci-fi, this is a perfect book for you to pick up.

Unhappily surprised submitted by glenna on August 4, 2016, 9:51pm I would have expected that better books would have won the two prestigious science fiction awards. I found the first part of the book hard to read with much more explanation about political underpinnings than was necessary. I found the rest of the book uninteresting. I expected better.
