Begin Thy doom. Between worlds and worlds ; That proud city ; Whom shall we send? ; Such an enemy we have ; From Afric shore ; In freedom equal ; Safe toward Canaan ; Better Thou belong ; Dispersed in foreign lands -- Translated saints. Hard liberty ; They on the trading flood ; The brandished sword of God ; War then, war ; And get themselves a name ; This avenging sword ; By battery, scale, and mine -- The end of what we are. The wasteful deep ; My sect Thou seest ; Of rebel angels ; War in Heaven and battle proud ; The great consult began ; Disobedience ; In mutiny ; The rebel king ; The dire event ; Loud lament and furious rage ; My other self ; Their solitary way ; A land and times obscure.
The period between 1630 and 1660 was one of the most tumultuous in Western history, witnessing the birth of New England and, in the mother country, a chaotic civil war that rent the very fabric of English social, political, and religious life. At the center of this turbulent time was an outsized family: the Rainborowes. Shipmasters and soldiers, entrepreneurs and idealists, they bridged two worlds as they struggled to forge a better future for themselves and their kin.
