A dynamic history of the muckracking press and the first decade of the Progressive era as told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft--a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912 when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that cripples the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country's history.

details submitted by unknown on July 8, 2014, 8:10pm This book is interesting in that it makes the saying "the more things change the more they remain the same". It is an extremely detailed account of the Roosevelt/Taft relationship. The politics are very interesting in that we are actually fighting about similar things 100 years later. The details in this book are astounding

Interesting Times, Times of Change submitted by patricia alvis on September 29, 2014, 2:53pm Goodwin is a thorough researcher and writes readable prose, which contribute to make this an important history of this period. Aside from getting to know a lot about two of our truly great leaders, there are wonderful details of where things were at the time--the US senators chosen by the state legislators, not by popular vote; the presidential candidate aloof from politics; his first public appearance his acceptance of his candidacy.(will we yearn for that over the next months?). Integral to the quality of the report,Goodwin describes the role of the reformist journalists, the so-called "muckrakers", centering on S. S. McClure and his assembly of writers.
