"In her now classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon told the story of Claire Randall, an English ex-combat nurse who walks through a stone circle in the Scottish Highlands in 1946, and disappears into 1743. The story unfolded from there in seven bestselling novels, and CNN has called it "a grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries]." Now the story continues in Written in My Own Heart's Blood. 1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington's troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife, his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is, and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie's wife, Claire, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces. The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in twentieth-century Scotland, or not. In fact, Brianna is searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family's secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself. Written in My Own Heart's Blood is the brilliant next chapter in a masterpiece of the imagination unlike any other"-- Provided by publisher.

Another big, complicated book in my favorite series submitted by Krystal on June 14, 2014, 6:50pm I adore this series. Diana Gabaldon writes big, complicated stories with characters I've come to care about. All her characters are so well-rounded and "real"; no one is all "good" or all "bad". They're complicated people with faults and foibles. Add in well-researched historical settings and I was hooked from the very first book.

Couldn't put it down submitted by barbfoster on June 29, 2014, 10:39am Another wonderful story, couldn't put it down. The only thing wrong with the story is that I'm done reading it and will have to wait so long for the next book...

8th book in the Outlander series, and possibly the best yet. submitted by lmangus on July 3, 2019, 12:33pm Wait...book 9 isn't out yet? For the love of....sigh. !!! Gabaldon continues weaving the stories of so many of her now well-established characters, while adding new ones, as well as the twists and turns through (very detailed at times) actual historical events. You could easily read this book without having read any of the others, as Gabaldon takes wonderful storyteller care to infuse details from the prior books, so it's a wonderful historical fiction read all around (mixed with the romance, mystery and fantasy she's also known for). Her descriptions of loss, grief, love, battles, injury, ptsd, and on, bring the characters to life. Don't be scared away by the weight/volume...you won't be able to put it down.

LONG and WONDERFUL submitted by gwenenelson on August 5, 2019, 3:41pm Diana Gabaldon has you wanting more despite it being such a long book. The details are amazing and has you feelings as if you are there with the characters experiencing their loss and love.
