Lengthy masterpiece submitted by KOH on August 4, 2017, 5:01pm Original story that spans many years. I loved it.

Don't know what to think submitted by EJZ on June 24, 2018, 9:40am I was at turns bored by, and then really enjoying The Goldfinch.

At its best, it is an adventure novel about a boy, or two, who have a passion for life despite or even because of their tragic circumstances. It is a coming of age novel in which you feel the narrator maybe never really comes of age.

At its worst, the narrator's insistence on doing the right thing, when everything he does is the very definition of the wrong thing, is grating to say the least. Later, as the characters feel compelled to literally deconstruct the meaning of prior events in conversations, it's as if you are being told, directly, by the author, what the philosophical and symbolic meaning of the book should be taken as. In my favorite literature, meanings are teased out, over time, and the reader is guided to discover on their own, and build their own interpretation of the work.

In The Goldfinch, Tartt beats the reader's head in with a hammer: MESSAGE! The end sometimes justifies the means! MESSAGE! People aren't all good or all bad!

I just wish the book was about half the volume, and omitted either all of the adventure or all of the obviously philosophical navel-gazing. It felt pulled in two separate directions, never really succeeding in either.
