In the year 1963 in Yokohama, an innocent romance blossoms between two high school students, Umi and Shun. As Japan recovers from World War II and prepares to host the 1964 Olympics, the mood contains both optimism and conflict as the younger generation struggles to escape the shackles of the past. While trying to save a dilapidated Meiji-era club house from demolition, the relationship flourishes. But a buried secret from their past emerges to cast a shadow on the future and pull them apart.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Feel good movie submitted by Carmenandadam on May 10, 2014, 12:15am I loved this movie! I can see why there was a waiting list. The music, animation, the story... I was all about it. Didn't disappoint. You should just go ahead and reserve this one.

A Good Movie submitted by i'm a blobfish on July 27, 2014, 1:55pm This movie was great! I love the movies of Miyazaki. Too bad I can't meat him. If you were looking for a movie to watch, I suggest you watch this one.

Liked it! submitted by Xris on June 26, 2018, 8:33pm I liked this film and watched it with my anime club. Too bad the lead male voice actor can't do any more. Good love story and good voice actors.

Okay submitted by mrajraspn08 on August 19, 2018, 3:03pm Not my favorite. Missing the whimsy that my favorite Miyazaki films have.

It Changed my Favorite Ghibli Studios submitted by Midna on January 10, 2019, 7:01pm Until revently, Princess Mononoke had been my absolute favorite movie from Ghibli Studios. Then I went to the library and found this. I was sceptical at first, and remembered little bits of it, like Shun and Umi finding that they have the same photograph, or the cleaning of the Latin Quarter, but I didn't remember it all that well. It sat on the floor of my room with the rest of my books and movies for a few weeks, till I finished watching The Wind Rises and was thoroughly depressed, so I picked this up and slipped it into my computer. I watched it all the way through and then watched it again. I found that I understood bits of it better as a 13-year-old girl than at any age before that. I loved how we watched Shun and Umi's relationship develop, then get smashed to pieces when Shun tells Umi that they are brother and sister, then see it get sewn back up after the trip to Tokyo. So, From Up On Poppy Hill is now my favorite Ghibli Studios movie. And it doesn't matter to me what anyone else says, they can't change it.

Chart your own destiny submitted by camelsamba on July 23, 2023, 11:24pm Gorgeous animation as you would expect from Studio Ghibli, with a meaningful story as well. The main action part of the movie revolves around school kids working hard to rescue a club house - with much more success once the boys accept input from the girls. But underlying all that is a sweet tale about star-crossed young mace — will the stars actually align?
