A boy named Seth drowns, losing his life as the pounding sea claims him. But then he wakes. He is naked, thirsty, starving. But alive. How is that possible? He remembers dying. So how is he here? And where is this place? It looks like the suburban English town where he lived as a child, before an unthinkable tragedy happened and his family moved to America. But the neighborhood around his old house is overgrown, covered in dust, and completely abandoned. What's going on? And why is it that whenever he closes his eyes, he falls prey to vivid, agonizing memories that seem more real than the world around him? Seth begins a search for answers, hoping that he might not be alone, trapped in a crumbling, abandoned world.

Enticing submitted by eschrine on June 28, 2019, 12:28pm Throughout the book, Ness continuously has the reader asking questions. Why is Seth in this place? Is it hell, purgatory, or something else? I really liked the format of this book, of which it goes back and forth between flashbacks of Seth's life on earth and in the mysterious place. There are happy moments, creepy moments, and sad moments. The world is well described, and while there is a dark tone, there's also some humorous conversations. A good read overall.

Wonderful! submitted by CarolSeidl on June 29, 2021, 8:56pm This story is remarkably thought-provoking! It has many unexpected twists and really forces the reader to ponder life. I absolutely would recommend this for anyone looking for something fast-paced and interesting.
