Shipwrecked and cast ashore in Japan with no memory of Temeraire or his own experiences as an English aviator, Capt. William Laurence finds himself tangled in deadly political intrigues that threaten not only his own life but England's already precarious position in the Far East.

Dragons in Japan in 1812 submitted by sdunav on June 16, 2014, 8:09pm Further adventures of Temeraire and his captain, beginning with Laurence shipwrecked (and separated from Temeraire) in Japan in 1812. Laurence has some problems with his memory and this is a clever way to recap earlier parts of the story arc, as he is reminded or remembers the past. Then it's on to China and then Moscow, battling Napoleon and caring for the eggs.

Better than the last couple Temeraire books, I think.

A worthy addition... submitted by GJBarnett2 on June 20, 2016, 10:40pm to Novik's "Temeraire" series, best read quickly in the order of publication in order to get the full sweep and master the details.

I can't stand the cheap trick used, but it picked up later submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 23, 2017, 3:21pm Oh no no no no no. I don't want to give away the schtick that Novik uses to get this particular chapter of the Temeraire story going, so I won't name it, but it's something that novelists lean on here and there that is waaaaaaayyyyyyy less common in real life. I think it's a cheap shot, and I can't stand it. If you can't think of a way to tell your story that will catch your reader's attention without resorting to cheap tricks like this, then don't tell the story.

Eventually we leave Japan and the cheap trick, and fly away to China, and then to Russia. The story gets back into the Napoleonic war and draws toward a close of the series. It picked up, I thought, as the action tightened.
