If I remember, all that Marvel had to offer animation-wise was bad (Fantastic Four as proof).
You name it: writing, animation-- even the background music was bad.
DC's "Batman: Animated" and "Superman: Animated" series from the same era stood head-over-heels as a comparison.
Good thing the Disney XD "Avengers" is decent.
