Using a deck of Lotería cards as her muse, eleven-year-old Luz Castillo, a ward of the state who has retreated into silence, finds each shuffle sparking a random memory that, pieced together, brings into focus the events that led to her present situation.

beautiful book submitted by paunava on August 11, 2020, 12:34am Each chapter is named after a loteria card - the item of each card helping the reader navigate Luz's trauma. My fave chapter is the one about the cantarito. Book does deal with some sexual violence - kind of comes out of no where - just an FYI. Beautiful book about resiliency and memory.
