Slavery, History, and Gardens on Long Island submitted by sdunav on June 16, 2014, 2:11pm Interesting blend of history, archaeology, and architectural study of a house on the east end of Long Island - actually, on Shelter Island, a small island of its own. The research is amazing but parts of the text are a bit dry if you're not really interested in history or the area.

New Yorkers and others in the Northeast US mostly don't realize how much of their colonial history was built on (and by) subjugated Africans and Native peoples - many of them slaves. Griswold does a pretty good job of showing their overlooked stories, as well as providing information on a lot of Puritan history, Quaker history, and other colonial issues. She doesn't write as well for a popular audience as Jill Lepore does, but I enjoyed the linked stories of Sylvester Manor and its families (from 1650-present).
