Satisfying end to a great trilogy submitted by LibraryMaven on July 2, 2014, 6:21pm This is one of the best historical fiction series about WWII that I have read and The FitzOsbornes At War is a thoroughly satisfying end to a trilogy that started with A Brief History of Montmaray and continued with The FitzOsbornes in Exile. I would suggest reading the trilogy in order, both for the sake of the characters and for the historical build-up to WWII that Cooper portrays so well, though if you are so inclined, The FitzOsbornes at War could be read as a standalone. The book is a fantastic portrayal of WWII England, particularly London, while at the same time following the adventures of royalty-in-exile, albeit royalty with little money and an island home overrun by the Germans. The late teen/young adult protagonists really do come into their own in this last book in a very realistic way- war makes everyone grow up and all five main characters have to make hard decisions about the sacrifices that they will make. Though I won't include any spoilers here, I will say that Cooper also makes hard decisions when writing: war is not without its casualties and she doesn't shy away from that.
