"Susan Elia MacNeal introduced the remarkable Maggie Hope in her acclaimed debut, Mr. Churchill's Secretary. Now Maggie returns to protect Britain's beloved royals against an international plot--one that could change the course of history. As World War II sweeps the continent and England steels itself against German attack, Maggie Hope, former secretary to Prime Minister Winston Churchill, completes her training to become a spy for MI-5. Spirited, strong-willed, and possessing one of the sharpest minds in government for mathematics and code-breaking, she fully expects to be sent abroad to gather intelligence for the British front. Instead, to her great disappointment, she is dispatched to go undercover at Windsor Castle, where she will tutor the young Princess Elizabeth in math. Yet castle life quickly proves more dangerous--and deadly--than Maggie ever expected. The upstairs-downstairs world at Windsor is thrown into disarray by a shocking murder, which draws Maggie into a vast conspiracy that places the entire royal family in peril. And as she races to save England from a most disturbing fate, Maggie realizes that a quick wit is her best defense, and that the smallest clues can unravel the biggest secrets, even within her own family"-- Provided by publisher.

easy to read thriller submitted by glenna on August 6, 2017, 10:13pm The second installment of the Maggie Hope series held my interest. While the plot was more than a little unreal, the story moved forward quickly and it was an easy read. The two princesses' characters were nicely drawn.

Light, fun mystery submitted by cjkoho on August 2, 2018, 1:51pm Suspend belief that someone could so easily gain the royal princesses' trust and you'll enjoy this lovely quick read.

good summer reading submitted by our family books on August 19, 2018, 8:03am The Maggie Hope mystery series is a good historical mystery - some details are accurate and some not. The Princess Elizabeth's spy is a quick read, with a great female lead.

Spy submitted by aamasud on August 23, 2019, 8:53pm Its a thriller book story

some code breaking submitted by camelsamba on July 17, 2021, 10:42pm I listened to the audiobook version, and I'm not sure I would recommend it. I don't like the narrator's voice for Maggie. It makes her sound whiny. Then again, Maggie gets whiny at times. The way she treats her work supervisor seems unrealistic. And it's hard to reconcile the characterization of her as logical and scientific with the way she gets overly emotional at times (especially regarding her family history - but then I suppose that's because family cuts so close to identity?)

On a positive note, there is a tiny bit of code breaking in this one. I wonder if it ever becomes central to a plot? Not sure I'm going to continue with the series to find out for myself! The two separate plot line twists at the end, designed to draw me in, instead left me annoyed.

(Inquiring minds want to know: does Windsor castle still employ a "vermin man"??)

Enjoyable mystery submitted by Jane Lloyd on July 8, 2023, 11:40am Easy to read, compelling, and fascinating mystery
