COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Great potrait of first love submitted by evelyn on June 23, 2014, 3:44pm I thought this book fell apart a little at the end- there were certain parts that I just didn't find believable. However, overall, it's a tender and moving portrait of two teenagers in love. And the narration on this audio book is great.

critically acclaimed submitted by camelsamba on August 1, 2017, 8:06pm This teen / young adult novel has received much critical acclaim. My reaction was somewhat mixed. It starts out with a lot of crass language, which felt like an assault on my ears since I was listening to an audiobook and almost made me abandon it. Had I been reading, i could have more easily skipped over it. However, it turns out that the crass language was crucial to setting the stage.

This is definitely a “coming of age” story. The narration switches between the characters. Eleanor and Park develop an unlikely friendship. Park is a Korean-American kid, rather your stereotypical Asian kid: hard-working, good student, etc., and also a fan of comics and punk rock. Eleanor appears in his life when she unexpectedly sits next to him on the bus. She comes from a poor family, and has an abusive stepfather. Their friendship develops slowly but turns into a romance. Eleanor has to step carefully because of the stepfather. Park faces cultural barriers from his otherwise supportive family.

Although I didn’t love it, I can see why this is critically acclaimed. It really does get at the intensity and confusion of young love. There’s heartache and pain and emotional rawness.

Good narration on the audiobook!
