COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The Borgias submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 16, 2013, 9:30pm This television series presents a mostly accurate depiction of the Borgia family from the election of Pope Alexander VI through his death. The family was famous for its licentious behavior and lavish spending of Church funds on food and risque parties, which the show portrays in great detail.

In this second season, we see cracks in the family's foundation, including conflict between the siblings.

Viewers should note that the series is very violent. This violence is historically accurate, but also (rightfully) disturbing. The violence includes war, murder, torture and rape. There are numerous lengthy torture scenes.

SPOILER ALERT: In the show, Juan has syphilis. It is not clear if this is historically accurate, but the disease was ravishing Europe at the time, particularly in Spain and France, thanks to those nations' colonization of the Americas where the disease originated. Again, the show's depiction of how doctors at the time "treated" the disease and what pain it caused those infected with it is accurate but terribly disturbing.
