COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Women Stole the Show submitted by crazypockets on June 17, 2013, 12:17pm I think of this as the musical for grown-ups, and the movie did a great job with that. I was surprised how impressed I was with the women in this since I thought they were going to be the worst. Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter were fun, and I thought it was really neat and respectful that they put the original Valjean (Colm Wilkinson) in the movie along with several people who had played the roles on stage. Hugh Jackman was ”meh” for me as Jean Valjean (the acting was great, but I still don’t think he has the voice for it), but Anne Hathaway blew me away. You can't watch that stunning one camera shot scene and not at least get a little teary. I don't know what Russell Crowe (or whoever cast him) was thinking in putting him in the role of Javert though because he completely butchered it. Javert is one of the best musical roles in history, in my opinion, and he completely couldn't carry it off. I read one review that said he sounded the whole time like he was singing through a mouthful of cotton balls, and that was spot-on. Javert is supposed to be commanding and in control, and even when he's unraveling, he's at least still in control of his own voice. Not with Crowe's version though. Other than that, cinematography, art direction, etc. were pretty great. Watch it if you want a good cry because you will be crying through most of this.

Best Seats in the House submitted by Beth Manuel on June 17, 2013, 3:18pm I've seen the stage presentation of Les Mis twice, but watching the film on DVD gave me the opportunity to understand what was happening on stage more completely. I thought Anne Hathaway was amazing. I thought Crowe was Ok, as was Jackman. He didn't strike me as the Valjean-type. Crowe's voice was all right. That's not an easy role to portray. The costumes, cinematography and cast were really fantastic.

Great Movie and Actors submitted by bookworm12345 on June 18, 2013, 9:42am This is a great musical for teens and grown ups. I watched this with my friends and we all got a little teary.
All the actors were great at singing-Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathway, Amanda Seyfried......
However, I think that Russell Crowe did a great job of sining. I dont understand why people thinks he's so bad. His voice is not as great as Anne Hathway's or Hugh Jackman's, but its really not so bad.

Great dramatic rendition submitted by adimarzo on July 1, 2013, 2:14pm This adaptation was a much more dramatic rendition of the story, with emphasis on the acting, than the stage version. But I though the songs suffered for it. You could tell which actors were hired for their singing ability and who was hired for their name recognition and/or acting ability. Hugh Jackman does a great job as Valjean, he can really hold his own with the songs. But Russell Crowe, while he has a decent voice, did not have nearly enough power to match what I came to expect from the stage version. And Anne Hathaway should have had a singing double. She did a great job actiing out the songs but her voice was almost painful to listen to. All in all I enjoyed the movie but it made me nostalgic for the song quality from the original musical.

Excellent Movie submitted by nwall24 on July 5, 2013, 11:33pm Most of the time I don't like musicals, but this was amazing. A great story line, no random songs about nothing, and actors that aren't lip sinking. Good stuff.

les miz submitted by a2sue on July 25, 2013, 7:03pm I prefer this version to the film starring Liam Neeson

sad submitted by isaacbrooks on July 30, 2013, 6:31pm but cool

Les Miserables submitted by SBNB on June 17, 2014, 6:58pm I like the music and Javert in this version, but the story seemed weaker than the 1998 version.

Beautiful submitted by lec.dank on June 17, 2016, 3:08pm Cried so much, it was crazy. The singing, music, plot -- everything was perfect.

It's a musical! submitted by toschag on August 2, 2016, 11:03pm I did not realize before that most of the movie is music, so go in prepared for a LOT of singing.

Not bad submitted by zmclaugh on July 20, 2018, 5:48pm Not a bad screen adaptation of the musical. Some voices were so-so but some where superb.

Great submitted by c_zhang on June 29, 2019, 12:09am Most of the time I don't like musicals, but this was amazing. A great storyline, no random songs about nothing, and actors that don't lip synch. Good stuff.

Les Misérables 2012 submitted by Varshini on July 30, 2019, 3:03am Pretty sad story, but I enjoyed it thoroughly! Great singing. 5/5 stars.

So moving submitted by amandasaurus on June 20, 2022, 12:58am If you watch it only for Anna Hathaway, you’ve done enough. The cast is incredible, the music is incredible, the whole thing is just absolutely amazing and beautiful and emotional and I would watch it over and over again.
