Forget Mowing submitted by monkk on July 24, 2014, 10:00pm I hate regular grass and the time and effort it takes to make it look nice. I love ornamental plants and grass though, so I plan on checking this out several times to help me sculpt my yard. Some really nice ideas!
Up Biodiversity submitted by thesrays on August 14, 2018, 9:52pm Grass is a boring, high maintenance monoculture that is lousy at supporting biodiversity. This book, however, suggests beautiful options that solve multiple problems for homeowners while giving back to the environment as well. A win-win!
Alternative Lawns submitted by Meginator on August 28, 2020, 6:16pm This is an excellent introductory resource for anyone interested in alternative landscaping, even if your intention is only to explore your options and not, say, replace your entire lawn with alternative plants. Penick covers everything from planning and battling the local HOA to exhaustive lists of specific suggested foliage, from groundcover to decorative flourishes. The book includes basic instructions for small- and large-scale planting as well as suggested patio and hardscaping materials, complete with construction tips. Despite its title, the book stresses flexibility, and Penick consistently emphasizes that every reader will find their own unique preferences and solutions. This attitude and a wealth of accessible information make this an essential book for anyone looking to re-think their lawn.
