COMMUNITY REVIEWS

So-so submitted by Zekicmom on June 17, 2013, 7:32pm Had some hysterical moments, but not much of a story.

Terrible submitted by crazypockets on June 26, 2013, 5:27pm I thought this movie was so depressing, it wasn't funny. Beyond the "getting old" storyline, the thing that depressed me the most was just what terrible people both of these characters were and how that was glorified and presented as supposed to be funny that these people were being as selfish and hedonistic as possible. There was an attempt made to show how they had become "messed up" to begin with from their parents' actions, but really, any sort of justification or resolution on that fell completely flat. There was maybe one funny moment through the whole movie, but I just cringed through the rest of it, the high point being where the woman verbally assaults a 13-year-old boy in a completely hurtful way, then gets away with it by immaturely acting like it was the boy's mother who was to blame, then the two main characters celebrate and rebond over being such completely disgusting people.

Judd Apatow is usually good; I've enjoyed his other movies, and I like Paul Rudd. So I can't really understand why anyone went along with making this movie. I think his wife (who plays the lead female role) should seriously be reconsidering her marriage as it shows her as nothing but the lowest example of every terrible wife/crazy woman stereotype on the planet. She was needy, controlling, selfish, irrational, and whiny (oh SO WHINY). Maybe this would appeal to people at that exact stage of life more, but I thought it was unrealistic, out of touch, and mean.

bad submitted by jjdijkstra81 on June 29, 2013, 5:56pm worst movie i had seen in a while. couldn't watch the whole thing. just a bunch of dumb arguments and complaining.

40 was great, but not this movie submitted by LVDS on July 1, 2013, 4:29pm Dysfunctional relationships, dysfunctional family with lots of F words, NOT worth your time, sorry I wasted mine.

this is 40 submitted by a2sue on August 1, 2013, 6:17am this is 40 was ok, but nothing special

This is Awful submitted by schoenbaechlere on August 12, 2013, 8:46am This movie had no plot and seemed to drag on for hours. Avoid!

Worth watching, more than once submitted by pjkneessi on September 21, 2013, 10:35am This is an anti-"romantic comedy". It's not anti-romance, but it doesn't rely on the cuteness of the rom-com genre.
These are imperfect people, so caught up in their lives that they rarely deal with problems skillfully. Sometimes the daily outcomes are hilarious, sometimes painful. Through it all, they struggle to remember that they really are crazy about each other.
Judd Apatow probably couldn't have gotten this film made 8 years ago. His more recent successes earned him the leeway to leave the characters a little more raw, not just cute and polished. I didn't like Pete and Debbie every moment, but I never hated them... they were real and forgivable.
I'll watch this one again in a few months. I'd recommend this film to anyone, with the advisory that the language does get pretty raw in spots.

not bad submitted by dree411 on July 27, 2014, 5:38pm there were definitely some good moments in the movie, but not as great as I had hoped

Disappointment submitted by emjane on August 20, 2014, 1:56pm I had hoped this would be the sort-of "not funny premise" told with a mix of comedy and drama that "Funny People" was. Unfortunately, it was mostly depressing and flat without the jokes. A few funny moments, but not worth investing the more than two hours it takes to watch it.

bleh submitted by KOH on August 12, 2017, 7:23pm Don't bother. I was surprised it was so bad since I like the lead actors. But this is not worth your time.

Kind of bad submitted by c_zhang on July 5, 2019, 12:57am It wasn't a very good movie.

Funny moments, but honestly pretty bleak submitted by jaromatorio on August 28, 2019, 1:55pm I definitely got some laughs out of this movie, but overall it was really sad and rather frustrating watching this couple's relationship disintegrate. Both the main characters were self-centered and generally not very nice people, and their relationship was further strained by pressures at work and raising kids. I wanted to root for their marriage to work, but by the end of the movie I felt so little sympathy for either of the main characters that I didn't even really care.

Lots of reviews, and opinions. THIS was FAR Better than your average CRAP from Hollywood. Not perfect, though. submitted by Tassos on December 28, 2019, 9:12am I did enjoy watching the whole thing, with only very few times when I fast forwarded. Go see it, it is fun. They should drop the sugary, imbecilic happy ending though.

The plot has a lot of holes in it, but overall it is fun to watch, while 9 out of 10 STUPID movies from Hollywood are UN WATCH ABLE.

d submitted by kscapellie on July 11, 2020, 3:50pm hysterical moments

Disappointing submitted by RebeccaWittekindt on August 4, 2023, 7:17am Really wanted to like this one. Love the two leads, but I found myself simply not caring about their “problems”.
