COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Great for kids and adults alike submitted by messa on June 14, 2013, 12:51pm As an adult, I usually don't like these kinds of movies, but this one really is funny for both kids and adults. There's a lot of bodily function and gross out humor that the kids will love and there's some wink and nod humor that the adults will get, but that will fly right over the kids heads, so sitting through this won't be the torture it usually is for adults.

Dracula has built a hotel for monsters where he and his monster friends can feel safe from humans, but most of all, he can keep his daughter safe from the world. He's a bit on the overprotective side, to say the least. He has his reasons for this, which are explained in the movie. All is well until his daughter's 118th birthday when she wants to go see the world. Daddy tries everything he can think of to put a stop to this when in wanders a......gasp.....human. He's a young man traveling the world and he tells the daughter about places she's only dreamed of.

The rest of it is pretty predictable for adults, boy meets monster girl, boy and monster girl have a misunderstanding and make up, blah, blah, blah, (which, for the record, Dracula reminds us he never said) but, all and all it's a funny and entertaining movie. The theme seem to be acceptance, which is a great lesson for anyone.

Enjoyable and well-executed but needs a feminist makeover submitted by cherylo on June 18, 2013, 5:13pm Hotel Transylvania was enjoyable and frenetic joke machine, with a sweet but fairly predictable boy meets girl plot. Drac lost his lady love to marauding humans, so now he protects the entire monster community by creating the perfect human-free resort enclave. Most of all, he wants to protect his sweet little vampire daughter, Mavis. (Don't ask me how that works when there is no procreative tradition in vampire lore anywhere except human conversion.) Mavis is about to celebrate her 118th birthday as the main action opens, but look, a human adventure backpacker stumbles into the monsters-only eponymous Hotel. Hilarity is already knee deep at the moment Johnny appears, and only increases with his arrival. He disrupts Drac's orderly plans with tales of the outside world and cultural intrusions from a world the monster community turned their backs on and hide from. Worst of all, he seems to have made an instant connection with the daughter Drac wants to protect and keep at home.

I have to object a little to the usual sexist trope of daddy Dracula protecting his little girl forever. I wonder if Dracula's offspring had been written as a son and the human interloper been a female this would have been as well-received. Please don't mistake me, I enjoyed the film, but I also recognize the power of its assumptions and messages.

Hotel transylvania submitted by doov on July 17, 2015, 8:21pm It showed that people shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I thought it was a funny movie and I'm glad I got to see it.

animated movies SUCK. They REALLY do. They should have used humans instead. submitted by Tassos on October 27, 2019, 6:14pm Saw 15 mins then left. Then came back and saw the rest of this idiotic tale. Wasted two good hours, but was multitasking when I did, so OK.

Great Family Fun Halloween Movie submitted by jgerman79 on July 28, 2020, 9:07pm Not scary. Fairly predictable for adults. Yet fun and decently good, until the sappy ending. Ah well. It was good time spent with my kids!
