Learned something new! submitted by crazypockets on June 21, 2013, 1:18pm I didn't know anything about surfing going into this movie, and I wasn't all that interested in the sport, but I really like Gerard Butler, so I checked this out. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The story is both a coming of age movie (for both characters) and an interesting profile of a sport. The surfing footage is spectacular. Gerard Butler nearly drowned while they were filming this movie, and it's easy to see just how dangerous this sport can be and just how athletic a person would have to be to survive some of the accidents that can happen. For anyone who has ever loved something to the point of bordering on obsession, this is a great movie. The story also delves into the question of what fatherhood means, and I thought the biographical elements were very well done.
