COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Strange submitted by crazypockets on June 20, 2013, 7:44pm This movie was very very odd. I wasn't quite sure what to think of it. It was definitely different than most movies out there, and the acting was absolutely terrific. Joaquin Phoenix's character is completely unlikeable...well, most of the characters in this are, but somehow you can't stop watching a move he makes. I'd be really interested to see other reviews of this movie from other users because it was so different.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME submitted by GJBarnett2 on August 12, 2013, 10:41am This movie reminds me of the fairy tale about the Emperor's new clothes."Everyone" says it's such a great "artistic" film with little or no dissent. In short, everyone becomes afraid to say out loud that this is just a complete piece of crap. Kind of reminds me of local politics. Aren't we all so happy that we all have the same opinion that ... this is such a wonderful "film." After having tried once to watch it, unsuccessfully, several weeks ago, and having been persuaded by the review (see above) to give it a second look, I still couldn't make sense of this confusing, pointless story of a charismatic cult leader, his deluded followers and the violent, perhaps psychopathic anti-hero Joaquin Pheonix Manipulation, betrayal, theft and more than hints of incest. A joy for the whole family! Something for everyone.

Intense submitted by RebeccaWittekindt on July 1, 2023, 6:21pm Anderson has never disappointed me as a director, and this was no exception. Phoenix was so unhinged and unpredictable, his character was a train wreck of a human being, trying to find some kind of direction or purpose. He finds it, or thinks he does, in the charismatic charlatan cult leader played by Hoffman. Hoffman and his following are based on L. Ron Hubbard and scientology, and even with the charisma, it’s hard to believe that what seems like such obvious nonsense and psychobabble actually managed to get such a large following.
